“On the couch” 2011 Oil on canvas
A very iconic image for me from my last work place where this is set. Feet sore and customers thinning (if there even were any), the dancer find solace on the couch, arms crossed, attitude flaring.
And now for something that has struck a chord with me:
David Foster Wallace’s thoughts on Kafka:
“That the horrific struggle to establish a human self results in a self whose humanity is inseparable from that horrific struggle. That our endless and impossible journey home is in fact our home”
“Checking the time” oil on canvas 2011
A distant empty stage awaits the next scheduled dancer. Cold cheerless men sit around the podium.
They sit quiet although still appear anxious for entertainment, one leaning on the stage in anticipation.
In the foreground the dancer leans on the bar, checks her watch with an ambiguous expression on her face.
Does she note the time in reluctance? Indifference?
Coloured lights catch glints in her dark hair.

This is me preparing my section for the Tafe exhibition…
I put in 3 paintings, 1 drawing, 2 prints and Belle’s old shoes (the dancer who posed for me in most of my paintings)

Apologies for the poor photo of it
A dancer posed in the middle of a stage, quiet and seductive. Her flawless body so toned and pulled taut in her position she could almost be a mannequin.

A theatrical pose, a seductive expression, spotlight shining on the dancer like there is nothing and no one more important in the room.
